October 08, 2018 38

A round table on addressing obstacles and barriers to trade in Nepali NTIS products took place 19 th July 2019 at the Shangri la Hotel, Lazimpat.
The objective of the round table was to identify key obstacles to the development of trade (domestic and foreign) in NTIS products in general and for specific products and discuss and agree on measures and actions (public sector and from private) to remove them.
Participants attended from public bodies, private sector representative bodies and entrepreneurs.
Presentations from selected stakeholders were made to the plenary of all 50 attendees which highlighted the challenges as follows:
1. The challenges of identifying and using the trade law rationale to challenge Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) of key trading partners and the actions needed by Nepali stakeholders to reinforce those arguments.
2. The use of the internet and physical infrastructure for information provision, marketing and sales of Nepali NTIS products – challenges, opportunities and lessons learned
3. Challenges of ensuring consistent quality and integrity of products e.g. Silver crafts, carpet and handicraft sectors
4. The effectiveness of current financial support to MSME - adapting support to the current challenges
5. The role of sectoral and product group associations in addressing obstacles and barriers to trade – challenges and opportunities e.g. for the carpet, footwear and handicraft sectors
6. The challenges of being a landlocked country and the obstacles related to port of entry and transit.
In the afternoon break-out session attendees were organised into task forces to identify solutions to the above challenges.
